Freeing the teacher's voice

As teachers we use our voice every day to communicate and we are placing strain on it constantly. This course will give you practical strategies to use your voice effectively and protect it for your daily use and beyond.  

During the day you will get to explore how the voice works and what internal and external factors affect, energise and drive it. You’ll discover what sounds and placement are useful and healthy and develop approaches that will improve your expression and better capture and hold attention. Expect to engage with some exciting ideas and exercises that will shift your relationship with speech and communication.

Donald Woodburn believes passionately in demystifying the world of voice (because it really isn’t rocket science) and addressing the misconceptions and misguided perceptions we have of it that impinge on our vocal freedom. As such this workshop is designed to explode some myths and to expose and explore simple pathways to vocal health, stamina and freedom.

Donald Woodburn

Donald’s unique and exiting contemporary approach to voice emerged from a blend of cultural experiences growing up in rural Africa, as well as extensive engagement with war correspondents and other broadcast journalists doing demanding work under challenging circumstances. The deep impact of these experiences steered his research towards the enormous impact that culture and environment have on expression. Donald’s speciality is his understanding of the profound impact gravity has on our fundamental relationship to the world, and our physical and vocal freedom in it.

Donald works with an array of backgrounds and professions. He runs Woodburn Voice, is a Director at BrandU Media and is on the board of Feet First Collective. He was the Coordinator of Voice in both the Acting and Music Theatre departments at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and prior to that Head of Voice at the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance (AFDA). He has also worked with leading television and radio broadcasters in Australia, Africa and the Middle East. Donald secured residency in Australia as a distinguished talent in his field and his reputation has seen him invited to train a cross-section of professional speakers in the corporate sector, education, politics, law, medicine and the NGO sector. He is the author of five children’s books.
